Vivienne Westwood
Tradition, sent into orbit
Orb pendant debut1987
OriginLondon, United Kingdom
The Orb is one of the most recognizable elements of Vivienne Westwood’s visual language. In the house’s account, its development in the mid-1980s brought royal imagery together with the rings of Saturn, expressing the idea of carrying tradition into the future.
The first Orb pendant appeared in the Harris Tweed Autumn/Winter 1987–88 show. The emblem subsequently expanded across jewelry, clothing and the brand’s wider environment. The contrast between familiar historic references and an unexpected futuristic detail makes it a distinctive lens for exploring pearl-like strands and emblem-led designs.
